Who Is Devante Smith-Pelly?

Habs Devante Smith-Pelly

Growing up in Ontario, Devante Smith-Pelly never thought one day he would be playing for the Montreal Canadiens. The 22 year old will make his debut as a Hab Thursday night against Columbus.

Devante was drafted 42nd overall at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Anaheim Ducks. He was scouted as a very physical winger who could skate really well with major upside. He played 3 years in the OHL with the Mississauga St.Michael’s Majors. In 184 games, he amassed 78 goals, 75 assists for a total of 153 points. He has been bounced around between the Anaheim Ducks and Norfolk Admirals since the 2011-12 season but finally solidified a spot on the main roster this season. In 54 GP, he has 5 goals and 12 assists totaling 17 points. He was never a dominant offensive player but there is one statistic that stands out with this youngster – his hits. The kid has 147 hits so far this season something that this Canadiens team need.

The Canadiens desperately needed a forward who can hit and they will get that from Smith-Pelly. Amongst Canadiens forwards, Smith-Pelly will rank 1st in hits with 147. There are only 3 players on this Canadiens team that have over 100 hits this season which includes DSP, Weise and Emelin. As you can tell, the Canadiens do not dish out the physicality often but bringing in a 6 foot, 225-pound winger like DSP will help the Canadiens get more physical. The physicality that he will bring along with his skating ability and slick hands will benefit the Habs in the stretch run and into the playoffs. He isn’t afraid to get in the dirty areas, lay out the body or even score a few goals like he did in the playoffs for the Ducks last season.

I honestly believe that this kid will bring the intensity and passion in his debut as a Hab. Wearing the CH that has so much legacy will motivate him to become a great player for the Habs. He has great potential and we can only hope that he blossoms into a great player for the Habs in the near future.
