Four Canadiens Receive Qualifying Offers

June 26th, 5:00 P.M. EST, was the deadline for teams to submit their qualifying offers to the RFAs they’d like to continue negotiating with. To no one’s surprise, Alex Galchenyuk received a qualifying offer from the Habs brass. However, Galchenyuk is not the only restricted free agent to earn a qualifying offer. Former 2013 2nd round pick, Jacob De La Rose, Max Friberg and Charlie Lindgren also obtained qualifying offers.

Unfortunately, the Habs opted not to grant the majority of their restricted free agents a qualifying offer.

College free agent pickups, Ryan Johnston and Joel Hanley, didn’t earn a qualifying offer. That news came to my surprise knowing that the Habs management were particulary high on the two defensive prospects. Joel Hanley and Ryan Johnston were exceptional with the Habs affiliate team, the St.John’s IceCaps. Their hard work under the tutelage of Sylvain Lefebvre impressed the Habs brass as the former college free agents earned a stint with their NHL parent club. In doing so, Joel Hanley and Ryan Johnston each played 7 games in the top-tier league mainly playing bottom 6 minutes. However, the two rearguards combined for zero points.

Among others, Stefan Matteau, Mark MacMillan, Connor Crisp, Ryan Johnston, Joel Hanley, Dalton Thrower and Keegan Lowe were the other RFA’s that were unable to obtain an offer. It seems to be the case that the Canadiens chose to reshape their farm team.

Unqualified RFAs become free agents on July 1st.
