Could Martin Reway Make the Habs?

Slovakia native Martin Reway has recovered from a serious illness that sidelined him for the entirety of the 2016-17 season. Throughout his unfortunate ailment, Martin Reway was on extremely strong medication while being unable to induce physical activity into his daily lifestyle. He was immobile for the majority of his sickness. The 4th round, 116th overall pick in 2013 also lost a lot of weight during his untimely sickness.

Fortunately, all of Reway’s medical problems are now behind him, and he is poised to contend for an elusive spot on the Montreal Canadiens roster. Reway has set extreme expectations for himself coming into this year’s campaign.

However, is a spot on the Montreal Canadiens roster a realistic presumption for the young winger? It’s hard to tell if he can definitively cling onto a spot with the Habs, as we just haven’t seen him play enough. Despite that, there are plenty of reasons to believe that he could make the lineup. On the other side of the script, there is also overwhelming evidence that he may be sent down to the Laval Rocket in order for him to develop into a better player.

Why Martin Reway Could Make The Team:

Martin Reway has experience playing with grown men in Switzerland and Czech Republics’ top-tier leagues. In doing so, the Czech born Slovakian has produced at a point per game clip so far throughout his professional career.

Martin Reway’s fantastic scoring numbers came to no one’s surprise. The former Gatineau Olympiques forward obtains excellent stick-handling ability, an accurate wrist shot and swift skating. Reway maintains the heart, grit, and determination to stay with the play and battle for the puck in corners, very similar to that of Paul Byron, who is also a former Gatineau Olympiques forward. Considering Martin Reway’s accolades, he can indeed turn a few heads this upcoming camp. The determined winger will do anything his power to make sure he secures a spot with the Montreal Canadiens.

Why Martin Reway Won’t Make The Team:

In actuality, Martin Reway’s likelihood to make the final cut is very low. Yes, he does have the capability to produce jaw dropping plays. His incredible offensive abilities also make him a tantalizing option on offense.

However, when all said and done, Reway will have to compete for a spot in the lineup with a handful of other forwards. Jacob De La Rose, Andreas Martinsen, Charles Hudon, Michael McCarron, Torrey Mitchell, Nikita Scherbak, Chris Terry and Peter Holland are all fighting for the same spot as Reway. The aforementioned players certainly possess the strength to play for the Montreal Canadiens, so Reway’s arduous quest for a spot is even more ambitious. Unfortunately, we cannot overlook  Martin Reway’s gruesome illness and his time away from the game. It’s highly improbable for Reway to make the jump to the NHL after a year off from hockey. In all likeliness, he may be best suited to play for the Laval Rocket.

This year’s camp will produce quite a few shocks in terms of who’s in and who’s out, and Martin Reway could end up on either side of the cut.
