Tampa’s Barberio Signs Contract With Habs

Mark Barberio

Former Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Mark Barberio has signed a one year, two-way contract with the Montreal Canadiens worth $600K with an AHL value of $325K.

The 25 year old played 52 games with the Lightning during the 2014-15 regular season, grabbing one goal and six assists, as well as serving 34 penalty minutes with an average of 16:46 time on ice per game.

Overall, Barberio has played over 103 regular season games, collecting 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) as well as harvesting 134 points (30 goals, 104 assists) in 215 games in the AHL in three seasons with Norfolk and Syracuse.

While “you can never have too many defensemen” on the ice, Barberio’s good depth could likely have him replacing Greg Pateryn, Davis Drewskie, Jarred Tinordi, and Bryan Allen in St. John’s next season. He will also help fill the hole on the left side of defense for the Habs, as he is an effective player who outperformed his third-pairing minutes in several categories with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
